Charitable Contribution
In 1987 a few of our members were quite disturbed when they went to give to the annual United Way drive by the railroad. They discovered that all of their money was not getting to the place where it needed to go. It seemed that everyone got a little slice of the pie. When the pie finally got to the place of need all that was left was a little crust. , Not only was the money not getting to the needy, but also others were taking credit for the giving.
We established a voluntary fund in our local where a member could have money taken out of his check through payroll deduction each month and then pooled together to give to charity. A few dollars each month seems to grow. I went back over the records and discovered that this local has given $57,861.00 to charities.
You need to understand that this money does not come out of your pay check through union deductions unless you sign a pledge card and allow the money to be collected on your behalf. The money goes to tax deductible charities each year and you are furnished a receipt telling you how much you gave and to whom.
Here is a list of a few of the gift receivers: Catholic Community Services (most local churches give through this organization). Festival of Trees, Primary Children's Hospital, Cystic Fibrosis Assn., Utah diabetes Association, Teamsters (to help a fellow employee), Shriners Hospital, Juvenile Diabetes Assn., Utah Food Bank, Boy Scouts of America, National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Kiwanis Club (to aid a fellow employee
This year we took $2030.00 to Harmon's Grocery Store. They matched our money dollar for dollar for a total of $4060.00. With this money we bought turkeys and donated them to the Utah Food Bank.
All of the money is passed directly through this local and no costs are deducted ", from it. All of the work is freely donated.
The local thought that probably most of the members were not informed of this fund. We would appreciate your participation with us. Would you please fill out the enclosed form and send it to the Treasurer or give it to one of the Local Committeemen.
Thank you
